South African singer Tyla emerged as a major early winner at the 68th Grammy Awards, securing the Best African Music Performance award and edging out top African stars including Burna Boy, Davido, and Ayra Starr.
The awards ceremony was held on February 1 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, where Tyla was recognised for her hit single Push 2 Start. The win marks another significant global achievement for the fast rising artist, whose music has gained widespread international traction over the past year.
The Best African Music Performance category, introduced to celebrate contemporary African sounds on the global recording industry’s biggest stage, featured a competitive lineup. Nominees included Burna Boy, Davido featuring Omah Lay, Eddy Kenzo in collaboration with Mehran Matin, and Ayra Starr featuring Wizkid. Tyla’s victory further underscores the growing influence of African music worldwide.
In another notable outcome connected to the African diaspora, US born singer Shaboozey, whose parents are Nigerian, won the award for Best Country Solo Performance. He triumphed in a category that included established names such as Tyler Childers, Chris Stapleton, Zach Top, and Lainey Wilson.
Shaboozey’s win highlights the evolving nature of country music and its increasing openness to diverse voices and cultural influences beyond its traditional roots.
As the ceremony continues, more winners across major categories are expected to be announced. Updates will be provided as the night progresses, reflecting the unfolding highlights of the 68th Grammy Awards.
