Tamale-based rap star Maccasio has been named Overall Artist of the Year at the inaugural Ghana Northern Music Awards (GNMA) 2025, marking a landmark moment for the music industry in Northern Ghana.
The maiden edition of the awards scheme, which aims to recognise and celebrate exceptional musical talent across Ghana’s five northern regions, honoured Maccasio for his sustained dominance, cultural influence and contribution to projecting Northern music onto national and international platforms.
His triumph headlined a night filled with celebration, creativity and regional pride, as artistes and industry players gathered to spotlight the depth of talent emerging from the North.
In addition to the top honour, Maccasio also won Viral Video of the Year for his hit single “Corner There,” further cementing his influence in shaping trends and commanding digital engagement within Ghana’s music space.
The awards ceremony featured 31 competitive categories, rewarding artistes, producers, DJs, bloggers and other creatives for their contributions to the industry. The event showcased a wide spectrum of genres and regional representation.
Among the standout winners were Ataaka for his lyrical prowess in hip-hop and Wiz Child, who secured the Voice of Tomorrow accolade. Regional talents such as Saint Chicago (Upper East), Rekordz (Upper West), Drip Dwitt (Savanna Region), S Bio (Northern Region) and Sapashini (North East Region) were also recognised for their impact.
The night also carried an international dimension. Dancehall artiste Shatta Wale received a Special Recognition Award (Ghana), while Nigerian superstar Davido was honoured with the Special Recognition Award (Africa), underscoring the growing visibility of Northern Ghanaian music within the broader African entertainment landscape.
Organisers of the Ghana Northern Music Awards congratulated all winners and nominees, reaffirming their commitment to nurturing talent and supporting artistes in their career development.
