Ghanaian rapper Kwaw Kese has broken his silence on the backlash surrounding the GoFundMe campaign he launched in support of fellow artiste Kwesi Arthur, who is currently embroiled in a dispute with his former record label, Ground Up Chale.
Background to the Fundraiser
The campaign, created in January 2026, sought to raise $150,000 — the amount Kwesi Arthur claimed the label demanded before granting him rights to use his own images. Kwaw Kese explained that his sole intention was to help “free” Arthur from what he described as a contractual deadlock.
Early Donations and Momentum
Speaking on Hitz FM on February 16, 2026, Kwaw Kese revealed that donations began pouring in almost immediately after the fundraiser went live. Within minutes, seven contributors had donated a combined $170.
“Kwesi Arthur has over a million followers. I have over a million followers. If everyone gave a little, we could have raised the amount quickly and secured his freedom,” he said, emphasizing the campaign’s reliance on collective effort.
Kwesi Arthur’s Response
Despite the initial traction, Kwesi Arthur publicly distanced himself from the initiative, urging fans to ignore the fundraiser. His statement sparked widespread debate across social media, with many questioning the legitimacy and intent behind the campaign.
Kwaw Kese, however, defended the transparency of the platform:
“You cannot create a GoFundMe for someone and simply pocket the funds. It is a public platform; everyone can see what is happening. My sole intention was to help Kwesi Arthur.”
The Fate of the Funds
Kwaw Kese disclosed that the money raised remains untouched. While he initially considered redirecting the funds to charity, he now says he is leaning toward refunding contributors if the matter is not resolved by the campaign’s deadline.
Industry Implications
This episode adds another chapter to the ongoing dispute between Kwesi Arthur and Ground Up Chale a saga that has reignited conversations in Ghana’s music industry about contracts, artiste rights, and label relationships.
For now, the GoFundMe campaign stands as a flashpoint in the larger battle over ownership and artistic independence, highlighting the growing role of crowdfunding in modern music disputes.
