Ghanaian rap veteran Tinny has sparked fresh debate in the music space after boldly declaring Lord Kenya as the greatest rapper Ghana has ever produced.
Speaking on Hot Weekend Jam on Hot 93.9FM, hosted by DJ Lord Dash, Tinny did not hesitate in crowning the Hiplife pioneer as the ultimate GOAT.
“Lord Kenya is my greatest Ghanaian rapper of all time. I like the way he raps, his style, lyrical content, everything. He is the GOAT,” Tinny stated.
His comments highlight the enduring influence of Lord Kenya, whose contribution to Ghana’s Hiplife movement helped shape the foundation of modern Ghanaian rap.
A Pioneer of the Hiplife Era
Born Abraham Philip Akpor Kojo Kainya, Lord Kenya rose to prominence in the late 1990s after signing with Slip Music. His debut album Sika Card became an instant success, positioning him as one of the leading voices of the era.
He went on to build an impressive catalogue with albums such as Sika Baa, Yeesom Sika, Sika Mpo Fane Ho, Akasieni, Born Again, and God Dey.
His 2000s dominance earned him major accolades, including Best Ghanaian Rap Music Award at the Anansekrom Festival in Canada and Hiplife Album of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards.
In 2010, Lord Kenya made a dramatic transition that shocked fans and industry players alike. Following what he described as a spiritual encounter, he stepped away from secular music and embraced Christianity.
He later released the gospel project Christlife in 2011 and made the rare decision to give up the rights to his entire Hiplife catalogue, forfeiting royalties in the process.
Today, Lord Kenya leads the Face of Grace Covenant Temple in Ahodwo, Kumasi, dedicating his life to ministry and spiritual work.
His journey from chart-topping rapper to pastor remains one of the most unique transitions in Ghana’s music history.
Tinny’s endorsement is likely to reignite the ongoing conversation about Ghana’s rap hierarchy, with fans weighing Lord Kenya’s legacy against other greats in the industry.
But for Tinny, the verdict is clear. The crown belongs to Lord Kenya.
