Akwaboah Speaks Out on the Hidden System Behind Hit Songs in Ghana urban certified

Akwaboah is speaking out and this time, it’s not through music.

The celebrated singer and songwriter has opened up about a hidden culture in Ghana’s music industry that he says has quietly affected his earnings. Despite writing multiple hit songs, he believes the system has made it difficult for creatives like him to fully benefit from their work.

At the center of it all is an unwritten “code.” Many artistes avoid charging each other for songwriting or collaborations. While it may promote unity, Akwaboah says it comes at a cost.

Why Songwriters Struggle to Earn

According to him, Ghana’s music industry still lacks strong business structures. Unlike global markets, songwriting here does not always translate into steady income. Abroad, artistes often earn from both performing and writing. In Ghana, that balance is rare. This gap makes it difficult for songwriters to maximize their value, even when their work becomes successful.

The Cost of Playing by the ‘Code’

Akwaboah admits the impact has been significant. Many of the songs he has written for other artistes became hits. However, the financial rewards did not always match the success of those records. The culture of free collaborations and minimal fees has limited what he could earn over the years.

It Started With Passion, Not Profit

Interestingly, money was never the goal at the beginning. Akwaboah says he started writing songs to prove a point that not every artiste needs to write their own music. Songwriters exist to fill that gap. That mindset helped him build a strong reputation quickly. His first major writing project became a hit, and more success followed.

Time for Industry Change

Now, the conversation is shifting. Akwaboah believes the industry must evolve. Proper systems, clear agreements, and fair compensation are necessary if creatives are to thrive.

As Ghana’s music scene continues to grow globally, the business side must catch up with the talent. Because behind every hit song is a creator who deserves to be paid.
